Of course I knew it was science at work (the vinegar’s acid dissolving the calcium carbonate in the eggshell) but seeing that bouncy, rubbery egg for the first time was a shocking delight.

I’ve turned this experiment into a free, one-page printable with a wizardy theme, designed to pair perfectly with the Escape from the Sorcerer’s Spell Escape Room I’ll be releasing next week. You can use it as a stand-alone science activity, or as a fun add-on to the escape room adventure.

A few tips:

• This activity takes about 48 hours, so plan ahead.

• If you’re doing it as a group, you can either:

  1. Send kids home with secure-lidded containers, or

  2. Do it as a group demo and have a finished “rubber egg” ready to reveal.

• While the egg sits in vinegar, stop and have kids observe the bubbles forming on the shell. Those are carbon dioxide bubbles—the proof that a chemical reaction is happening right before their eyes!

It wasn’t a big leap, considering the sundaes were courtesy of coupons they’d earned from our public library’s summer reading program. But it is a bit overdue, since let’s be honest, I’m no stranger to reading rewards.

I volunteer on our school’s monthly reading challenge, where we use a mix of small, purchased gifts and coupons for treats from local businesses. These coupons include free cookies, scoops of ice cream, cakepops, and other fun surprises. I’m on coupon-design duty for the reading challenge. And today, I’m sharing all my ideas to help you score awesome rewards on a small budget.

This post is part prize idea list and part donation-finding toolkit, so you can stock your prize box without overspending. And I’ve put together a Google sheet to help you track your prize donations and sponsor contact information. Libraries are already magical places, but a little extra motivation can go a long way when it comes to getting kids excited about reading challenges, scavenger hunts, trivia games, and any other programs you’re offering.

1. Small-Budget Prizes Kids Can Take Home Today

Even with a tight budget, you can make kids’ faces light up with small prizes bought in bulk or from discount suppliers. These prizes are simple to store, easy to hand out, and easy on the library budget:

• Erasers in fun shapes

• Pencils or pens (increase the “wow” factor with scented pencils, rubber pencils, favorite character pencils, “spy pens” that glow under black light, etc.)

• Glow sticks

• Origami paper or mini craft kits

• Bookmarks (themed, magnetic, or DIY)

• Stickers or temporary tattoos

• Slap bracelets

• Jibbitz™ charms (bracelet or Crocs)

• Candy or snack packs (mini chocolate bars, fruit snacks, lollipops)

• Mini notebooks or journals

• Fidget toys or stress balls

• LEGO® mini sets

💡 Tip: Consider using community forums (Facebook groups, google groups, etc.) to get the word out about the types of things you’re looking. You may be pleasantly surprised at what donations you receive.

2. Chain’s That May Be Willing to Contribute (and Why They’re Good Candidates)

National chains can be a great starting point when soliciting donations. While I can’t make any guarantees, the businesses below made this list because they either: A) Explicitly mention donations or community programs on their website, B) Run their own reading challenge or youth incentive program, or C) Support schools, libraries, or family events in other ways (suggesting they may be open to partnering).

Give them a call and tell them what you’re doing. The worst they can say is “no”:

• Applebee’s – Has a history of offering “Books Are A Blast” coupons for free kid’s sundaes. Their community page shows educational support, and many local franchises run literacy-related giveaways. Learn More: https://nrpneighborhood.com/a-is-for-applebees/

• Red Robin – Lists “Celebrate Everyday Heroes” on its community page, offering meal vouchers for local causes. This suggests they’re open to partnering with literacy programs. Learn More: https://www.redrobin.com/community

• In-N-Out Burger – Runs community programs that highlight youth and family initiatives. While not reading-specific, their outreach to schools and nonprofits makes them a likely candidate. Learn More: https://www.in-n-out.com/community

• Culver’s – Offers Scoopie Tokens and free custard with kids’ meals. Many locations have “Give Local” programs supporting education and youth. Learn More: https://www.culvers.com/about-culvers/give-local

• Bowlero / AMF Bowling – Runs Kids Bowl Free programs and sometimes donates free game passes for youth activities. Learn More: https://www.bowlero.com/blog/kids-roll-free-summer

• Wendy’s – Known for Frosty Key Tags and seasonal coupons. While their reading tie-in is not formal, they frequently provide small coupons to schools and nonprofits. https://www.wendys.com/csr-what-we-value/people/community

• Chick-fil-A – Many local operators offer “Be Our Guest” cards for a free menu item. Their strong community giving culture makes them worth approaching. https://www.chick-fil-a.com/global-impact/community

• Krispy Kreme – Has rewarded good grades with free donuts in the past and has strong youth engagement programs. Could be approached for reading rewards.

• Sky Zone / Urban Air – Many parks have community partnership or donation request forms and are known to donate jump passes for fundraisers.

💡 Tip: Some of these programs vary by location, so always contact the local manager or check the corporate giving page first.

3. Partnering with Local Businesses

Don’t just think about the big chains … many local small businesses love supporting community programs and getting their name in front of families. In fact, these partnerships are where we get most of the gifts for the monthly reading challenge I volunteer on. Some great places to reach out to include:

• Bakeries – free cookie or cupcake

• Ice cream parlors – free scoop

• Pizza shops – free slice or small pizza

• Art studios – free class or workshop

• Toy stores – $5 coupon

• Bookstores – free or discounted book

• Dance studios – free trial class

• Sports teams – free tickets to a game

To make it easy for the business, I offer to design, cut, and print the coupons kids use to redeem their prize. This is helpful because smaller businesses often don’t have the same graphic design and printing support as bigger chains. You can easily find a free “coupon” or “certificate” template on Canva and customizing it with details such as:

• What the gift is

• Business name and address

• Who sponsored the gift (if different than the business name)

• Valid dates (we do a week-long window and find that the short timeframe is easier on the business and fun for kids because they almost always see a friend or two redeeming their certificate at the same time)

• If the coupon can be redeemed in-store only (this may be worth specifying if the store also offers delivery, etc.)

• Any other details the business wants included

💡 Tip: It’s always a good idea to have the owner or manager approve the coupon before you print them all. Also, it’s good practice to recognize the business in library signage, newsletters, or social media.

4. Raffle Tickets for Bigger Prizes

If a business can only give one item instead of hundreds, turn it into a high-energy raffle!

Raffles are a great way to stretch a single donated item into excitement for dozens of kids. They add a layer of anticipation that can keep kids coming back for the chance to win. Here is a rough outline of how you can organize the raffle:

• Each time a child completes a challenge, they earn a raffle ticket.

• Tickets go into a drawing for a bigger prize, such as:

  • $25 gift card to a toy store

  • Family pizza night

  • Bowling or mini-golf outing

  • Tickets to a local zoo, aquarium, or museum

  • Escape room or arcade passes

  • Signed book by a local author

• If multiple prizes are available, kids can put their ticket in the cup associated with the gift they want most

• Set an official “draw date” so kids know when to expect the winners to be called. Depending on the number of patrons you serve, once per season is usually sufficient.

• Don’t be afraid to use the raffle tickets as a prize for multiple activities (like all the scavenger hunts, trivia games, etc. you offer during a set period of time). The suspense of “Will my ticket get drawn?” keeps kids engaged and encourages them to participate again and again.

💡 Tip: Keep the raffle jars somewhere visible so kids can check their entries and size up the competition. And always mention which business donated the gift — they’ll appreciate the recognition!

5. Non-Material Rewards That Feel Special

Not every prize has to come with a price tag. In fact, some of the most memorable rewards are experiences that make kids feel recognized and connected to the library. These “insider” perks cost nothing but can have a big impact:

• “Librarian for a Day” experience – Let the child help check out books, recommend a display, or stamp due dates.

• Name featured in a new library book – Add a “Donated in honor of…” sticker inside the cover.

• Pick a book for the children’s librarian to order – Gives them a sense of ownership and pride.

• Behind-the-scenes library tour – Show them the book return system, staff area, and any “mystery” doors. (Can also arrange tours to other public buildings like the fire station, police station, water treatment plant, etc.)

• Meeting with the Board of Directors – Invite the winners to a meeting with the Library’s BOD. The kids will appreciate the honor and you’re sure to get some great ideas.

6. National Reading Reward Programs

You don’t have to do all the work yourself to keep kids reading. Many national businesses and organizations offer their own reading reward programs, and you can easily point families toward these opportunities. They can be a perfect supplement to your library’s challenges, or a great option if you don’t have the capacity to run your own program.

Sharing these programs not only gives kids more chances to earn prizes, but also connects families to reading-friendly businesses in your community. Also, remember that these programs may vary by store or be discontinued, so always check with your local store.

How to Find and Request Local Donations

Approaching local businesses doesn’t have to be intimidating. With a little preparation and a clear plan, you can make the process smooth and successful.

Step 1: Find Potential Partners

• Call local stores and ask for the manager or marketing lead.

• Visit in person with a short, printed letter about your program.

• Search online for “[business name] + community donation” or “[business name] + fundraising program.”

• Check the footer of business websites for links like Community, Fundraising, or Donations.

💡 Tip: Keep a running list of which businesses have been approached, when you contacted them, and their response — it’ll make next year’s outreach much easier.

Step 2: Decide What to Request

When you reach out, be clear and specific. Examples include:

• Food treats – ice cream scoop, cookie, cupcake, pizza slice, milkshake

• Activity passes – bowling game, mini-golf round, arcade credits, trampoline park pass

• Retail items – small toy, craft kit, bookstore gift card

*Bigger items may be more suitable as a raffle gift

Step 3: Prepare Before You Contact

• Have your program details ready: dates, goals, and number of participants.

• Bring or attach a short, printed letter with your request.

• Be clear about how you’ll recognize the business (flyers, social media, signage).

A few weeks ago, I shared that my son was working on a stop motion animation for the Mark Rober CrunchLabs challenge.

Well—spoiler alert—he didn’t win. But he did have a morning full of creative problem-solving, giggles, filming bloopers, and lots of learning. He ended with a finished video he felt proud of.

And to us, that’s a huge win.

Even better? Stop motion is surprisingly easy to learn and incredibly rewarding for kids.

In fact, my son learned how to animate during a school field trip to a local museum. He came home excited, inspired, and ready to try it at home. We didn’t need fancy equipment, just a tablet and a big imagination.

And now I want to help you bring that same kind of excitement to your library, classroom, or kitchen table. If you can take photos with a phone or tablet, then you already have the skills needed to make stop motion movies, and so do the kids you serve. This makes it a perfect, high-interest library activity for ages 8–12.

Let’s break down how to run your own stop motion program, from prep to final credits.

What Is Stop Motion, Anyway?

Stop motion is a filmmaking technique that brings inanimate objects to life, one photo at a time. You simply take a picture, move the object slightly, take another picture, and repeat. When you string the photos together, the object appears to move on its own.

You’ve probably seen professional stop motion without even realizing it. Movies like Wallace & Gromit, The Nightmare Before Christmas, or Shaun the Sheep are all made using this method.

But you don’t need a Hollywood studio to get started. You just need a device with a camera and a creative idea.

Picking Your Materials: What to Animate

One of the best parts of stop motion is that you can animate almost anything. Here are some options, based on what we’ve seen at home and in programs:

• Foam Building Blocks – Easy to stack and rearrange. Great for beginners.

• Mini Figures or Action Figures – LEGO minifigs, 3D-printed characters, or even dolls.

• Clay or Play-Doh – Ideal for claymation-style videos.

• Paper Cut-Outs – Flat pieces that can slide across the screen or “talk” with changing expressions.

• Everyday Objects – Think pencils that duel, buttons that dance, or cookies that disappear bite by bite.

• Drawings on a Whiteboard – Take a picture, erase and redraw a little bit, take another. Great for 2D animation!

Choosing Your Software

There are several kid-friendly apps that make stop motion super easy:

• Stop Motion Studio (iOS and Android) – Our personal favorite. Free version works great, with options to add sound, voiceover, or titles. The first video in this article features this app.

• iMotion (iOS) – Simple and intuitive, with time-lapse and stop motion options.

Planning the Story

Before jumping into filming, it helps to take a step back and plan. While it is possible to create an epic Hollywood-style stop motion film, most kids are surprised to learn that even an 8-second clip might take 80+ photos! That pencil duel? It’s going to take some time to film.

That’s why I recommend starting simple. A single action—like a cookie sliding across a plate or a LEGO figure dancing—is the perfect entry point.

Now that you have your medium, software, and storyboard. It’s time to start filming! Here’s how it works in Stop Motion Studio (though most apps are similar):

1. Go to the Play Store on your tablet or phone and download the Stop Motion Studio app (we started with the free version)

2. Open a new project in the app

3. Take a photo

4. Move the object slightly

5. Take another photo

6. Repeat until your scene is complete

7. Play it back, tweak as needed, and export!

While the pros use about 24 photos per second, we’ve found that 8–10 work well-enough, without being too overwhelming for young producers. That means a 10-second clip will use roughly 80–100 pictures.

Additionally, some kids may want to add sound effects or voiceover narration. Others might want to create a title card or “The End” screen. All of this can be done right in the app.

You can find some great “how to” videos on the Stop Motion Studio App’s YouTube page. I specifically recommend this one if you and/or your kids are completely new to stop motion:

Why It Works So Well at the Library

Stop motion is a dream activity for libraries:

· It’s hands-on, screen-smart fun

· Builds storytelling, sequencing, and creative confidence

· Can be run as a one-day event, multi-week club, or drop-in station

· Encourages collaboration and problem-solving

· Pairs perfectly with book displays or screening of movies like Wallace & Gromit or Shaun the Sheep

I’ve always loved making things up.

As a kid, I filled notebooks with stories. I talked to myself in the car. My sister, cousins, and I spent hours inventing plays to perform for our parents (some better than others, but all extremely dramatic).

And honestly? I still make stuff up, only now I do it professionally.

Writing escape rooms doesn’t pay all the bills (yet), but it has become my favorite way to dream up silly mysteries, like out-of-control popcorn machines, missing trophies, and (of course) stolen marshmallows.

Which brings me to today’s treat:

Campfire Story Starters — a free printable filled with s’mores-themed prompts to help kids create hilarious, gooey, chocolate-dripping stories of their own.

You can use it two ways:

• Writing Time – Let kids pick a prompt and write their own campfire mini story.

• Story Circle “Campfire” – Gather kids in a circle (real or pretend campfire-style) and go around, each adding one sentence to the story.

Today I’m thrilled to share something special: The Sound of Silk, a lyrical picture book I wrote nearly a decade ago, and finally brought to life with polish, design, and a sprinkle of bravery.

I first wrote this story after visiting silk-making villages in Cambodia and Myanmar. I can still remember the soft rustle of mulberry leaves, the click-clack of wooden looms, and the glimmer of silk threads stretched in the sun. The process felt timeless, because, in many ways, it is.

Silk has been spun the same way for thousands of years. In ancient China, the origin of silk was a closely guarded secret, so precious that revealing it was punishable by death. Eventually, that shimmering thread unraveled across continents, fueling trade on the famed Silk Road.

Today, silk still supports families around the world, providing not just clothing but, in some regions, food (boiled silkworm pupae are protein-rich snacks!).

But enough facts. I wrote The Sound of Silk to capture a feeling.

And now, after years of letting it sit on my hard drive, I gave it one final polish, added some graphic design magic, and turned it into a printable you can download, display, and color.

The Sound of Silk

In the dark of night,

there is a sound.

Thousands of hungry silkworms

creep through mulberry leaves.

Their chorus is faint and gentle,

soft like summer rain.

The silkworms eat night and day;

it’s their only job.

     Eat-grow. Eat-grow. Eat-grow.




Four weeks later,

a different sound.

Workers move fattened silkworms

to woven baskets.

Cocoons take shape

as each silkworm releases silk

from the spinneret near its mouth.

It sets the silk in place,

moving its head

in figure-eight motions.

     Loop-loop. Loop-loop. Loop-loop.



In the glow of dawn,

there is sound.

The whisper of people;

the rustle of bags.

Workers have come

to collect the cocoons.

     Shuffle-step. Shuffle-step. Shuffle-step.



The cocoons are taken

to a building filled with activity.

The air is warm and steamy,

fed by cauldrons of hot water.

Workers submerge the cocoons;

the sticky coating dissolves away.

     Bubble-Fizz. Bubble-Fizz. Bubble-Fizz.



The workers begin the delicate process

of unravelling cocoons.

They use spinning wheels

to reel groups of thread.

The silk is long and strong;

each cocoon made of one strand

that stretches the length

of seventeen football fields.

     Spin-pull. Spin-pull. Spin-pull.



The silk is then dyed with natural pigment

from seeds, bark, and berries.

     Soak and swirl. Soak and swirl. Soak and swirl.



In the hot, midday sun,

There is a sound -

the rhythmic thumping of looms.

The hum of fans

gently paddling hot air.

Women weave the silk thread into cloth.

The process is long and difficult;

a skill passed through generations.

     Mother to daughter. Mother to daughter. Mother to daughter.



The women use hands and feet

to operate massive wooden looms.

Their movements result in an endless symphony

of clicking and clacking.

Despite the chaos,

the women produce flawless fabrics;

each piece is a collage

of tiny, interwoven crosses.

     Over-under. Over-under. Over-under.



In the glow of sunset,

there is a sound -

air swirls through beautiful

silk gowns as dancers sway

their bodies to music.

     Sway-swirl. Sway-swirl. Sway-swirl.



As the sun rises,

there is no sound.

But tiny eggs,

scattered through mulberry leaves,

are proof that something big

is about to happen.

My kids are deep into one of Mark Rober’s Summer Camp challenges — a stop-motion movie project. And honestly, I love it. Their brains are buzzing. They’re collaborating. They’re creating. It’s the kind of summer activity that makes my nerdy mom heart swell with pride.

But also? I’m hearing ‘Moooom!’ more often than the frame changes in a stop-motion movie.

No, you cannot make elephant’s toothpaste in the house.
Yes, I’ll help take pictures of your 3D-printed figurine — again. And again.

Let’s be real: that mini figure isn’t going to walk off the 3D printer by himself. And I’ve apparently been promoted to backup cinematographer (the vinegar-and-baking soda combo left some messy fingers unfit to touch the camera button).

I don’t know what’s in that fake butter, but I do know that I’ve been known to cradle a bucket of popcorn like a newborn baby. It’s warm. It’s salty. It’s mine.

Popcorn is one of my favorite parts of the movie theater experience—which is probably why I made a printable activity about it.

Today’s printable science activity supports classroom learning goals, including the following standards:

NGSS 4-PS3-4: Apply scientific ideas to design, test, and refine a device that converts energy from one form to another.
→ In this activity, students explore how heat turns water to steam, how steam causes the popcorn to pop, and how the structure of the kernel makes it all possible.

NGSS MS-PS1-4: Develop a model that predicts and describes changes in particle motion, temperature, and state of a pure substance when thermal energy is added or removed.
→ Students analyze how the popcorn kernel’s internal water changes state (liquid → gas), leading to pressure buildup and a sudden transformation. (Pop!)

Bonus: It also reinforces math skills—measuring mass, recording data, and comparing results.

Why Me?

One of my earliest memories is sitting cross-legged on the carpet, thumbing through National Geographic and feeling awestruck by the world beyond my living room. I didn’t have the vocabulary for it then, but I knew what I felt: wonder.

That spark led me to study public health at Johns Hopkins, work on global health projects in Korea, Laos, Vietnam, Mongolia, and the Philippines, and contribute to real-world policy change, including efforts that helped shift federal research funding in the U.S.

I’ve traveled to 22+ countries, taught medical writing, won an award from the U.S. FDA, and helped develop content for everyone from the World Health Organization to children’s librarians like you.

And through it all, libraries have been a constant, from the grand Carnegie Library of my childhood to the quiet neighborhood libraries in Korea where I rediscovered picture books through the eyes of my toddler.
